Staying healthy when in the air - healthy flying

It is important to be prepared for your flight so no complications happen onboard.

Onboard Conditions and Dehydration

The air in a cabin of a plane is very different to the air we breathe on the ground. The air is firstly very low humidity which contributes to dehydration.. Being dehrdrated can set off a number of conditions such as headaches, congestion and increases the risk of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). Dehdration can also irritate your eyes and cause contact lenses to dry out.

Drinking on a flight

This is why drinking alcohol is never a good idea on a flight. It may help temporarily with the fear of flying but it will not help your body physically. Also tea and coffee dehydrate you further so are best avoided. Water is the best thing to drink on a flight.

Feeling bloated on a flight

Have you ever noticed how tight shoes can feel when you have landed and you put them back on to leave the aircraft. This is due to the pressure in a cabin which can make gas in your body expand. Your abdomin can feel bloated and your sinuses might feel blocked because of this.

One way to help this feeling of being bloated is to wear very loose clothes on board and to remember to take your shoes off too.

DVT - Deep Vein Thrombosis

DVT is one of the most feared conditions that can affect someone flying, and in some cases can lead to fatalities if not treated immediately. DVT is basically blood clots in the calf area.

The best way to prevent this condition is to move around the cabin at least every 2 hours and to stretch your legs.
